Like many Medaille graduates, Bill Childs '07 VT relocated south after earning his degree - way south. In May 2008, a recruiter from Ross University on the island of St. Kitts, Caribbean contacted Childs and began an extensive interview process, leading up to his hiring as Intensive Care Unit Senior Technician and instructor, and his big move.
"I hadn't even told my family or friends what I was up to until I was invited to visit the University for an in-person interview," Childs says.
"I have been told by friends that it must have taken a lot of courage to come here, but I don't think so," explains Childs. "Every time I call home, it seems that everything is the same, and I love the new experiences that I'm having here. Even if I decide to go back home someday, I will never forget the time that I have spent here. Not many people can work in a beautiful vacation destination!"
According to Childs, "Working in the Caribbean is fantastic. I have always been a warm weather person, and it's a good thing because it is always warm on St. Kitts. I have a view of both the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean from my house."
"I have always had an interest in medicine," he continues. "I workedat Kodak for 10 years and was laid off. Shortly before that, I bought my first dog, a Weimaraner named Sadie. I was fascinated with watching her develop and decided to go back to school for veterinary technology. I commuted to Medaille from Rochester every day for three years."
As for the types of animals he sees in his position. "The locals are just starting to keep animals as pets, but we have a growing population of expatriates who bring pets here."
