Alum of the Month: Lisa Vathy '98 VT
Sunday, December 02, 2007
Most people don't use words like plasmid replication, electrophoresis, transfections, and bacteriology in everyday parlance. Lisa Vathy '98 isn't like most people. In her current job as a research technician at the University at Buffalo's Institute for Lasers, Photonics, and Biophotonics, those words are used on a daily basis.
Lisa's childhood interest in animals led her to volunteer at the Buffalo Zoo during high school, doing educational demonstrations with exotic animals. She says, "When I heard about the Vet Tech program (at Medaille), I realized the many areas a Tech could work in - medicine, training, behavior -- and thought this would be a good way to start."
After graduation from the Vet Tech program, Lisa entered a private practice, where she gained 10 years' experience in areas like general medicine and surgery, nutrition counseling, behavior training and modification. She moved on to Roswell Park for a short time working in animal husbandry, and then began in her current position at UB.
Outside of work, Lisa trains her border collies in obedience, rally and agility, and plans to compete with one of them. Two of her dogs have completed their Canine Good Citizen certification and their Therapy Dog certification. She says, "I am in the process of getting involved with a "reading with dogs" program in my area for children who need a little special help in learning to read! We will also be participating in the therapy dog visits to area nursing homes and schools."
Lisa's advice for the class of 2008: "Don't limit yourself! Your education you receive can be applied into many different avenues, not just lock you into one title. If you have an area of interest, pursue it! You never know where it will lead you!"
